LULAC Council 950 of Atlanta, GA
About Council 950
The Atlanta Council #950 of LULAC, chartered in 1981, although proudly involved in many different advocacy issues on behalf of the Atlanta Latino community, has long considered EDUCATION as its NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. Our Council established a 501(c)(3) scholarship fund to meet the growing demand for financial assistance in order for students in our community to remain in school and complete their education.
We have a track record of twenty years during which time our Council has awarded over $550,150 to 703 very deserving and talented Latino students.
Funds raised locally are matched, in part, by our National Office. Therefore, the total amount available for local awards depends on how successful we are in raising funds here. Applicants for our scholarships are required to meet certain standards and criteria in order to participate in our program, including qualifying scores in ACT or SAT tests and a combination of those scores with the applicants’ school grade point average. Scholarships are awarded only to graduates of Georgia high schools.
We are an all-volunteer organization and except for minimal administrative costs such as postage, supplies and printing, ALL contributions are used solely for scholarships and matters related directly to education.
Membership
Members of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), this country's oldest and largest Latino advocacy organization, recognized the shameful under representation of Latinos in colleges and universities. In their efforts to help our youth overcome the barriers to a good education, LULAC established a network of educational centers. The network was incorporated in 1973 as LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC). Through extensive support from parents, community leaders, schools, local Councils, and corporate partners, LNESC presently provides various educational programs including counseling, financial aid assistance, mentoring, literacy programs, and leadership development.
The Atlanta Council #950 was chartered in 1981 and has effectively and actively worked with other advocacy organizations for twenty five years in various issues affecting the Latino community. Its main project, however, is the education of our youth. This effort resulted in the establishment of the Atlanta Council #950 Scholarship Fund in 1986. This fund has 501 (c) (3) IRS status and all contributions are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
